Concerns are mounting over the rising number of kidney patients seeking treatment at the Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC), with dialysis cases witnessing a significant increase over the past six months.
Former councillor Shubham Komarpant said the number of patients undergoing dialysis at the health centre has risen from 99 to 114 during the period, indicating a steady increase in kidney-related ailments in the region.
Komarpant described the trend as alarming and urged the authorities to take immediate steps to strengthen renal healthcare services at the CHC. He called for the appointment of a nephrologist and the establishment of a dedicated kidney care unit to cater to the growing number of patients.
He also stressed the need to investigate the reasons behind the increase in kidney disease cases in Canacona and neighbouring areas. According to him, identifying the underlying causes is essential for preventing further escalation of the problem.
In addition, Komarpant advocated for awareness campaigns to educate residents about kidney health, early detection of symptoms and preventive measures that can help reduce the risk of chronic kidney disease.
With 114 patients currently undergoing treatment, residents and health activists are urging the government to enhance specialised medical facilities at the Canacona CHC to meet the increasing demand for dialysis and kidney-related care.
